Getting your library card

What to bring:
  • A valid photo ID
  • Proof of residence with name and address (utility bill, checkbook, recent mail, driver's licence).

Who:
  • Bell and Coryell county residents 18 and older
  • Bell and Coryell county residents 17 and younger accompanied by parent or legal guardian
  • Non-resident cards are available for $25 per year

Patrons are responsible for all materials checked out on their card, regardless of who used the card.

Limits
Only two items may be checked out the day a patron applies for a library card. All subsequent times the number of regular items checked out is unlimited except for New Books, which are 5 each. Only patrons 18 and over may check out unrated DVDs, DVDs that are rated R or M, or graphic novels located in the adult section.

Renewals
All materials except New Books, DVDs, Tablets, Interlibrary Loans and reserved materials may be renewed for one additional 21 day period. Patrons may renew the items by visiting or calling the Library at 254-953-5491 or by accessing the online catalog. Items that have been renewed once must be left in the Library for 24 hours before the same individual may check them out again.

Overdues
Books are overdue the day after the due date and materials will accrue a fine of $.05 per day until they are either renewed or returned. Overdue notices are emailed periodically. Please provide the library with your email address. Patrons with overdue materials may not check out additional materials.

A book drop is available for convenience in returning library materials during hours when the library is not open. Use of the book drop does not cancel fines. Materials may be damaged when deposited in the book drop.

Damaged and Lost Materials
Patrons are responsible for all materials checked out and are liable for the damages that may occur to library materials. The Librarian will notify the patron of payment due for the replacement of the damaged or lost item. Payment due is the cost of replacement for the item and a processing fee for most items.

Confidentiality of Circulation Records
 
The Harker Heights Public Library supports every patron's right to have his or her library records remain confidential. Library records include patron registration information, circulation records, records of library visits, overdue records, reserve records, participation in library sponsored programs, and any information that may link a specific patron to specific materials or services. Each patron has control of his or her library card and the presentation of the card permits access to information about the borrower's current circulation record. Except during the actual period of transaction, the Library will not maintain a record of transactions. When no longer needed for Library administration, records will be expunged.

In compliance with the State of Texas Confidentiality laws, no information will be released to any person, agency, or organization, except in response to a valid court order or subpoena, properly presented to the Library Director.

Nothing in the policy shall prevent authorized library personnel from using library records in the administration of their regular duties.

The Library Board and the Harker Heights Public Library endorses the American Library Association's Policy on Confidentiality of Library Records and the Texas State Library's "Intellectual Freedom Statement."
