Lead and Copper Information

The TCEQ regulation requires that customers served by a lead service line or any line with an unknown material be notified within 30 days of the inventory’s release. In 2024 the City notified 3,519 customers that their water service line type was unknown or galvanized. Since that time the City has inspected all of the unknown lines. As of June 2026, a total of 246 galvanized service lines and zero lead service lines were found in the City’s system.

The City frequently samples its water for lead, and results consistently show lead levels well within acceptable limits, which indicates that galvanized service line do not pose a risk of lead contamination.

Current federal regulations do not mandate galvanized service lines without lead exposure to be replaced at this time. However, residents are advised that this regulation could change and the recommendation is to prepare for the replacement or to replace the lines.

For more information on reducing lead exposure around your home/building and the health effects of lead, visit EPA's website at http://www.epa.gov/lead or contact your health care provider.

Residents or business owners who wish to learn more or would like to expedite the identification of their service line material, are encouraged to contact the City at 254.953.5600.

The City of Harker Heights has made its water service line inventory available to the public, effective October 16, 2024, in compliance with a new rule from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). This rule requires all Texas water systems to maintain an inventory of the materials used in service lines, which run from the City’s water main to the customer’s water meter.
